Welsh Junior Pairs Competition

Seven Juniors from Pembrokeshire attended the Welsh under 16 pairs competition in Carmarthen on Sunday 26th January. Amy Davies (Letterston) Sara John-Davies (Frestrop) Alex Penson (Penally) Joseph Fry (Penally) Phillip Llewellyn (Hook) Matthew Davies (Hook) and Cameron Kilminster (Tabernacle). Unfortunately circumstances beyond our control left Phillip unable to play in the competition. This was due to the late withdrawal of his partner from Carmarthen. I would like to commend Phillip on the way he dealt with his obvious disappointment. Every one gave a good performance on the day, the best was by Cameron and Amy who made it through to the Knock out stages by winning their group. They narrowly lost by one shot, to Sophie Slaughter and Steffan Davies. The eventual winners of the competition were Corey Miller and Aaron Slaughter from Carmarthen. All the Pembrokeshire players were invited to attend a Welsh under 21 Trial on Sunday February 2nd at Carmarthen.

Pembrokeshire Junior News

On Saturday 1st June, Pembrokeshire Juniors invited Cardigan Juniors to Letterston for a friendly get together. A most enjoyable day was had, with games of doubles and threes being played, along with coaching. Also a Target Bowls competition took place with every player taking part. The eventual winner was Lara Taylor (Pembs) second was Natasha (Cardigan).
I would like to thank all the Juniors who attended and the Parents, who provided food. Cardigan were very generous in providing trophies for the Target competition and donating raffle prizes. Well done to all who took part - it is hoped to make this an annual fixture, to be held in Cardigan next year.

Wow! What a super Sunday! Congratulations to Pembrokeshire County team on becoming the Welsh Short Mat Bowls champions after their magnificent win against Cardigan and West Glamorgan. Several thanks are due: first of all to Paul Hudson, County Team Manager for all the organising; to the selectors who have a very hard job choosing the team and to Martyn Davies, County Team Captain, who always puts an "interesting" slant on playing bowls!
Thanks and congratulations to the players who all played brilliantly througout the day and I think were helped by the many supporters who attended and encouraged and cheered the team on. I am sure that we are all looking forward to the Inter Team Challenge between Pembrokeshire and the top counties from England and Ireland, which takes place later this year.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the Presentation Dinner to be held at the Begelly Arms on Saturday 18th May which seems to be the perfect chance to enjoy ourselves and show our thanks to our fellow bowlers for the effort, time and committment that they have shown during the year.
Yours in bowling, Eileen Hodgson

Well done Hook!
Congratulations to Hook Bowls Club who represented Pembrokeshire at the league winners championship at Llandrindod Wells on Saturday 13th April. After a day of some very close games, Hook took second place, losing to Skewen (West Glamorgan) by just three points.
A word from 'Captain Kev'

Hi folks. As captain of Hook I would like to thank you all for making it a great league campaign. To win six seasons in a row is a fantastic achievement, made all the better by the stiff competition we had throughout the season. I would also like to thank all of the clubs and individuals who wished us luck at the league winners' competition where we came a close second. I hope we made Pembrokeshire Short Mat Bowls proud.
Good luck to all the teams left in the various cup competitions. Enjoy, and we at Hook look forward to seeing you all at the county dinner and then again in the autumn, where I am sure it will be another exciting season.
Regards, Kevin.

Wales at the British Isles Championship 2012

The Welsh team travelled to Potters on friday 16th November to compete at the British Championships. With a squad of 26 players from a number of different counties, Wales were competing in both the championship and international parts of the tournament. Pembrokeshire were well represented with 5 players from the county taking part...Andrew Evans (Tavernspite) Martyn Davies, Jon Gladstone, Paul Hudson and Andrew Hudson (Hook).
Andrew Evans was playing in the singles for the second time and this year he was determined to get his hands on the trophy. He was in complete control as he brushed all of his opponents to one side winning all 4 games and being crowned as the British Isles singles champion 2012. In the pairs, Wales were represented by Ceri Jones (Cardigan) and Graham Davies (West Glam) and they narrowly lost out on glory by losing the 'winner takes all' match against Ireland and finishing as runners up, a great achievement!
The Welsh triples were 3 young lads from Montgommery..Aled Humphreys, Andrew Jones and Nick Evans but unfortunately things didn't go to plan and they were edged into 3rd place behind the winners England and Ireland in 2nd place.
The fours saw 3 new faces in the Welsh team in the British Championships, Mal Morgan, Ben Jackson and Tom Brown and they were skipped by the experienced Ben Haddon (all from West Glam). It was however a tough rinks competition and they boys could only manage a 4th placed finish.
The Internationals or team event consists of 4 rinks from each country going up against each other and the overall aggregate from the 4 games decides the winner. Wales' first match was against the old enemy, England and after a motivational team talk from the new captain, Luke Haddon (West Glam), it was game on. As always it was a close and tense match with both nations being ahead at different stages of the game. 3 of the 4 rinks had finished and the aggregate was level, with one end of the final rink to play which included Jon Gladstone and Andrew Hudson, Wales were 2 shots up in the rink so it was all to play for. After a great end of bowls the Welsh rink picked up a count of 4 and were victorious over England by a total of 6 shots with the aggregate score being 35-29.
The 2nd match saw Wales go up against the favourites, Ireland, who had a team full of world class bowlers so was always going to be tough. Wales held their own in the first half of the match but Ireland then started to show their class as they ran out eventual winners by 46-31.
The 3rd and final match was against Scotland and in all honesty, Wales needed a bit of a miracle to be crowned overall winners but they were definitely going to give it all they had. It was a one sided match as wales won 51-28 which consolidated the runners up position, finishing behind Ireland who were the worthy winners.
All in all it was a very successful weekend for the Welsh team and lets hope the A series team can achieve the same success when they travel to Dumfries in March 2013.

County Pairs and Triples
The county pairs competition was played at Heatherton on Saturday 6th October 2012 and the triples the following day. Congratulations to Mike Harries and Mark Thorpe (Freystrop) who beat Paul Hudson and Kevin Davies (Hook) in the doubles final and to Ryan Thomas, Alan Evans and Andrew Evans (Tavernspite) who beat Mike Harries, Keith Thorpe and Mark Thorpe (Freystrop) in the triples final on Sunday. Many thanks to all who supported the competition.
County Singles
Double congratulations to Jonathan Gladstone of Hook Bowls Club who not only won the County Singles competition this year, beating Alan Evans of Tavernspite in the final, but who is now the county singles champion for three years running. The only other Pembrokeshire player to hold the same 3-year record is Paul Hudson, also of Hook Bowls Club. The question is, can Jonathan win it for a fourth year in 2013 or will someone else take the title?!
Roy Banner Doubles
Dot, Paul and all at Hook Bowls Club would like to thank everyone who supported the Roy Banner doubles competition at Hook on Sunday 16th September. Congratulations to Mark Thorpe and Marley Hughes (Freystrop) for winning the final against Jo Barker and Robert hughes (Penally).
